Even though the Yankees are in the midst of a battle for the AL East against the menace known as the Tampa Bay Rays, and trying to defend their world title, one cannot help but speculate what the future holds, especially when it involves the speedy left fielder Carl Crawford.

Through those nine season, Crawford has averaged a .295 batting average, 13 home runs, 77 RBI’s with an OBP of .336. This season, Crawford is hitting .284 with 15 home runs, 71 RBI’s with an OBP of .347.

There is no doubt that the Yankees will be interested in Crawford, especially with his left handed stroke in Yankee Stadium. He will command big money, perhaps in the 16-20 million per year range, and money has never been an issue with the Yankees.

The only question would be the length of the deal. At 29 years old, he will undoubtedly command a 6-7 year deal, maybe more. He is an incredible athlete though, which is a positive.

If I were to guess, it would be Brett Gardner getting the bump. Playing his first full year as a starter, Gardner thus far has put together a pretty good and respectable season, hitting .284 with five home runs, 41 RBI’s with an OBP of .389. He also has 39 stolen bases in 46 attempts. But, after a fast start to the year, he hasn’t been hitting as well of late. Perhaps Gardner could take a reserve role, backing up Crawford and Granderson while providing blazing speed off the bench. Gardner could even be used as trade bait.

Granderson has struggled mightily at times this season, and he has had stretches where he flourishes. He is hitting .249 with 17 home runs and 45 RBI’s this season. He tweaked his swing with Kevin Long in Kansas City, and ever since then he has been hitting better. But, it is after all his first season in New York, and many players struggle in their first full season with the Yankees, adjusting to the Yankee lifestyle. Who knows, perhaps working more with Long in the off season and going into next year with some New York Experience, Granderson could very well get his offensive numbers back to where they were last season with Detroit.

But, next seasons outfield may look exactly like this seasons. Crawford may not even land with the Yankees. He could very well stay put in Tampa Bay, although very unlikely, or he could sign elsewhere. Boston and the Los Angeles Angels of Anahiem are also possible destinations for Crawford.

但是明年球季的外野陣容也許有可能和今年差不多。因為Crawford不一定會轉隊來洋基。雖然機率不大，但是他仍然有可能繼續留在坦帕灣，甚至與其他球隊簽約。波士頓紅襪隊與洛杉磯天使隊都是Crawford可能落腳的地方。

海南涮羊肉

當然啦，這裡最主要的就是涮涮鍋，鍋底有羊奶鍋，海鮮鍋，麻辣鍋....等等幾種可以選擇。這邊的羊肉不像一般火鍋店的肉是切片的，而是切成條狀的，雖然一坨在盤子裡看起來賣像不佳，但是呢，吃起來卻是蠻嫩的，而且由於羊肉事先有醃過了，所以不需要沾醬料就很好吃了。而且我覺得羊騷味不重(不知道是不是我對羊騷味比較不害怕的關係?)

除了羊肉外也有豬肉片以及幾種青菜，火鍋料，海鮮比較少一點。 這裡的烤羊肉串也是一大特色，店門口有一位店員負責烤羊肉串，一人一次限拿三串，當然吃完可以再來排隊。羊肉串烤的很香，微辣，是來這間店絕對不能錯過的東西。

熱食部份還有麻油麵線，芥藍炒羊肉，蝦仁炒蛋，滷肉飯，炸地瓜，炸甜不辣，上海蔥肉煎餅....等。 這邊的甜點我也覺得不錯，有手工烤的竹碳餅乾，紅麯餅乾與鳳梨酥，這三樣都很好吃。還有紫米粥，蓮子白木耳湯....等。 冰品除了冰淇淋外，還有手工的鳳梨冰，紅豆冰，這裡的鳳梨冰，紅豆冰是裝在一小袋一小袋的冷凍袋裡。小時候我媽也都會在夏天的時候做這樣的冰給我們吃，所以吃起來覺得超懷念的，尤其是鳳梨冰非常的好吃喔!

一堆人排隊，拿金色包包，臉被頭髮遮住的夭鬼就是小嵐

到了位在成大附近勝利路上的"勝利早點"，果然已經有一堆"夭鬼"在排隊了。我點了最多人推荐的"蔥餅"與"豬肉蛋餅"，還有甜餅，油條，豆漿米漿各一碗。

好吃的蔥餅

首先品嚐的是剛出爐的蔥餅，將蔥餅剝兩半，酥脆的餅皮裡果然充滿了綠油油的蔥。吃了一口，蔥很甜很香，喜歡吃蔥的人肯定會喜歡的。接下來吃的是豬肉蛋餅，與一般早餐店的豬肉蛋餅不同的是裡面還包著高麗菜絲，吃起來有脆脆的口感與高麗菜的甜味，感覺比較不會那麼油膩。雖然豬肉的厚度不像食尚玩家主持人莎莎說的那麼誇張的厚，不過也是很好吃，份量也算多。

再來就是油條與甜餅。油條應該是已經炸好放了一陣子了，雖然還是蠻脆的，不過冰冰涼涼的，吃起來感覺更油，吃了一半就吃不下去了。甜餅則同樣有酥脆的餅皮，吃起來雖然乾乾的，但是越嚼越甜，我喜歡。

勝利早點的餐點種類非常的多，還有很多沒吃到，隔壁也有一家黑豆漿早餐店，生意看起來也不錯，下次再來吃吃看。

James "Jimmy" Samuel Morris (出生於1964年1月19日，德州布朗伍德)是一位前美國職業棒球選手，他簡短但傳奇的大聯盟生涯非常知名。

兒童時期，他總是忙著搬家，從一個城市搬到另一個城市。根據他的自傳的說法，他從三歲就開始接觸棒球了。越戰之後，他的父親成為了美國海軍的招募人員，家庭也定居於德州。之後 Morris 進入了 Angelo 州立大學就讀，但是這所學校並沒有棒球隊，因此他改打美式足球，但是他從未放棄成為職業棒球選手的夢想。

Ryne Sandberg

Ryne Dee Sandberg (born September 18, 1959 in Spokane, Washington), nicknamed "Ryno", is a former second baseman in Major League Baseball who spent nearly his entire career with the Chicago Cubs. He was named after relief pitcher Ryne Duren, and is recognized as one of the best second basemen of all time. Sandberg was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in January 2005; he was formally inducted in ceremonies on July 31, 2005. He is the current manager of the Peoria Chiefs.

Philadelphia Phillies

Sandberg was drafted in the 20th round of the 1978 amateur draft by the Philadelphia Phillies. He went on to make his major league debut as a shortstop for the Phillies in 1981.

However, the Phillies didn't have much room in the lineup for him at the time. The Phillies didn't think he could play shortstop, and he was blocked from second and third base by Manny Trillo and Mike Schmidt, respectively. The trade, now considered one of the most one-sided deals in baseball history, came about because Bowa had antagonized the Phillies' front office. However, Cubs general manager Dallas Green (a former Phillies manager) wanted a young prospect to go along with the aging Bowa.

Owens then went back to his scouts, who told him Sandberg wouldn't be any more than a utility infielder. However, Sandberg had hit over .290 in the minors two years in a row.

The Cubs, who initially wanted Sandberg to play center field, installed him as their third baseman, and he went on to be one of the top-rated rookies of 1982. However, Sandberg was displaced by Chicago's trade for veteran Ron Cey following the 1982 season, so Sandberg moved to second base, where he became a star.

After winning a Gold Glove Award in his first season at the new position, Sandberg emerged with a breakout season in 1984, in which he batted .314 with 200 hits, 114 runs, 36 doubles, 19 homers and triples, and 84 RBI. He nearly became only the third player to collect 20 doubles, triples, home runs, and stolen bases in the same season, led the Cubs to the National League's Eastern Division title (their first championship of any kind since 1945), and won National League Most Valuable Player honors.

One game in particular was cited for putting Sandberg (as well as the 1984 Cubs in general) "on the map", a NBC national telecast of a Cubs-Cardinals game on June 23, 1984. The Cubs had been playing well throughout the season's first few months, but as a team unaccustomed to winning, they had not yet become a serious contender in the eyes of most baseball fans.

As for Sandberg, he had played two full seasons in the major leagues, and while he had shown himself to be a top-fielding second baseman and fast on the basepaths (over 30 stolen bases both seasons), his .260-ish batting average and single-digit home run production were respectable for his position but not especially noteworthy, and Sandberg was not talked about outside Chicago. The Game of the Week, however, put the sleeper Cubs on the national stage against their regional rival, the St. Louis Cardinals. Both teams were well-established franchises with a strong fan base outside the Chicago and St. Louis area.

In the ninth inning, the Cubs trailed 9-8, and faced the premier relief pitcher of the time, Bruce Sutter. Sutter was at the forefront of the emergence of the closer in the late 1970s and early 1980s: a hard-throwing pitcher who typically came in just for the ninth inning and saved around 30 games a season. (Sutter was especially dominant in 1984, saving 45 games.) However, in the ninth inning, Sandberg, not known for his power, slugged a home run to left field against the Cardinals' ace closer. Despite this dramatic act, the Cardinals scored two runs in the top of the tenth. Sandberg came up again in the tenth inning, facing a determined Sutter with one man on base. As Cubs' radio announcer Harry Caray described it:

The Cubs went on to win in the 11th inning. The Cardinals' Willie McGee had already been named NBC's player of the game before Sandberg's first home run. The winning run for the Cubs was driven in by a single off of the bat of Dave Owen.

In 1990, Sandberg led the National League in home runs – a rarity for a second baseman – with 40. Sandberg was only the third second baseman to hit 40 home runs; Rogers Hornsby and Davey Johnson hit 42, and no American League second baseman has yet reached forty. Sandberg also batted in 100 runs, despite batting second in the order. His batting average did not suffer from his new level of power, as he finished at .306 for the season. Sandberg, Brady Anderson and Barry Bonds are the only players to have both a 40-homer (1990) and 50-steal (1985) season during their careers. Sandberg played a major league-record 123 straight games at second base without an error. This has since been broken by Plácido Polanco of the Detroit Tigers.

In 1992, Sandberg became the highest paid player in baseball at the time, signing a $28.4 million four year extension worth $7.1 million a season. He earned a spot on the NL All Star roster and an NL Silver Slugger Award at second base with a .304 batting average, 26 home runs, 100 runs, and 87 runs batted in.

After struggling early in the season, Sandberg retired in 1994. While he had been a historically slow starter throughout his entire career, his 1994 start was slower than normal. In his book, Second To Home, Sandberg said,

He came back for the 1996 and 1997 seasons, retiring again with a career batting average of .285, and a record 277 home runs as a second baseman; this record was surpassed in 2004 by Jeff Kent.

Since retiring, Sandberg has kept a low profile. In 2003, Sandberg accepted his first marketing deal since his retirement, agreeing to be spokesman for a Chicago bank. He also appeared on ESPN Radio 1000 as an analyst during the 2004 baseball season. He currently serves as manager of the Peoria Chiefs and formerly served as a spring training instructor for the Cubs in Mesa, Arizona. He is also a former baseball columnist for Yahoo Sports.

Sandberg delivered what many traditionalist fans considered a stirring speech at his Hall of Fame induction ceremony in 2005.^[1] He thanked the writers who voted for him because it meant that he played the game the way he had been taught it should be played. He spoke several times of respect for the game, and chided a subset of current players who, in his opinion, lack that respect. Specifically, he spoke of how the game needs more than home run hitters, citing that turning a double-play and laying down a sacrifice bunt are weapons many of today's greats don't value.

He followed up on his Hall of Fame induction by becoming only the fourth Chicago Cub to have his number retired. The others have been Ernie Banks (#14), Billy Williams (#26) and Ron Santo (#10).

菜單上的菜色和鼎泰豐很類似，大多是小籠包，燒賣等港式點心與上海點心。我們還在菜單上發現了小嵐在大陸吃過就念念不忘的"上海生煎包"。

先上桌的是兩樣小菜，豬耳朵與小魚乾。這裡的豬耳朵與一般外面賣的不同，不是切成絲，而是切成有點厚度的薄片。一般的豬耳朵吃起來比較脆，而高記的吃起來像豬耳朵"凍"，口感頗佳，味道也不錯。至於小魚乾真的是超好吃，超脆的。不會太辣也不會"死鹹"。

接著上來的就是小籠包(10個$150)，海鮮酸辣湯與上海乾拌麵($60)，小籠包看起來和鼎泰豐的根本就一模一樣，皮也是一樣超薄的，裡面充滿了湯汁。美味程度不輸鼎泰豐。酸辣湯裡面的料很多，有蟹肉，干貝和蝦仁。上海乾拌麵則較為普通，雖然也不錯，但是還是鼎泰豐的蔥花干麵略勝一籌。

再來就是最期待的上海鐵鍋生煎包，上桌時鐵鍋還發出滋滋的聲響，外觀與在大陸吃的生煎包類似，生煎包的底部在鐵鍋上煎的脆脆的。由於之前在上海與蘇州吃的生煎包裡面都和小籠包一樣充滿湯汁，所以我小心翼翼的咬了一小口，準備要吸湯汁，啊~~怎麼沒有湯汁呢?令我有點失望。生煎包的外觀雖然和大陸的很像，但是吃起來就差了一點，大陸的底部吃起來更酥脆，也許是用大鍋子煎，火力比較強的關係吧。

甜點當然是點了我最愛的豆沙小包，去鼎泰豐我可以不吃小籠包，但是絕對不能錯過皮超薄豆沙小包。豆沙小包剛端上桌時大家都傻眼了，以為他送錯了，因為這根本不是"小包"啊，是"大包"，這裡的豆沙小包不是像鼎泰豐的一樣小巧可愛，而是比較像是一般的豆沙包的大小。

我們就坐在廚房的旁邊，可以透過一大片的玻璃看到廚房裡廚師準備料理的過程。這點也和鼎泰豐很類似。我覺得高記的料理美味程度不輸鼎泰豐，而且不用排隊排老半天，是除了鼎泰豐以外想吃小籠包以及其他上海點心的另外一個好選擇。

阿強仔冰店

今天下班吃飽飯後心血來潮，決定去嚐嚐前幾天電視上介紹的科學麻辣冰，從公園路轉長榮路，過了大學路一小段就到了這間"阿強仔冰店"。我點的當然是"科學麻辣冰"，由於之前在網路上看到有人因為太辣了，配了兩杯西瓜之才吃完，所以我又另外點了一杯冬瓜茶。

這裡的冰品種類很多，除了冰以外，還有賣關東煮與鍋燒麵，點餐是在櫃檯填寫點菜單，付完錢後店員會給你號碼牌，接著就等著叫號碼啦。點完餐不到一分鐘我點的冰就好了。第一眼看到這"科學麻辣冰"，覺得老闆真是太天才了，竟然能想到這種組合。冰就是一般的挫冰，還有糖水，上面灑滿捏碎的科學麵，科學麵附的調味粉與辣粉。

第一口先從旁邊沒有科學麵的地方吃起，真的就是一般的糖水挫冰，沒啥特別。第二口吃了一些科學麵，鹹鹹甜甜的，冰冰脆脆的，真的是奇特的味道加上詭異的口感，還真不是一般的特別阿!!第三口吃了一沾到辣粉的科學麵與冰。A~~真的是這被子第一次吃到的口味勒，沒有想像中的辣。一口接著一口吃，雖然不會很辣，但是吃到後來舌頭和嘴唇都變得麻麻的，頭皮也冒了點汗。冰的份量還漫多的，可以兩個人吃一份，而且建議別吃太慢，因為等到科學麵泡得軟軟的時候，吃起來的口感應該會有點噁心吧。

至於冬瓜茶呢，不知道是不是冰的口味太重的關係，所以我一點也喝不出味道來啊，疴疴!!

Bret William Saberhagen (pronounced /ˈseɪ̪bɚˌheɪ̪ɡɨn/; born April 11, 1964 in Chicago Heights, Illinois) is a former Major League Baseball right-handed starting pitcher. His nickname was 'Sabes.'

Career

Saberhagen was drafted out of high school by the Kansas City Royals in the 19th round of the 1982 Major League Baseball Draft and made his Major League debut on April 4, 1984. He made an immediate impact with the team, compiling a 10-11 record and a 3.48 ERA. The Royals made the postseason but lost to the Detroit Tigers. Saberhagen pitched well in his first postseason start, giving up two runs in 8 innings.

He was also the subject of much media attention during the Series as his wife gave birth to his first son, Drew William, on the same night of the infamous Don Denkinger call. Saberhagen developed an odd pattern of successful years in odd-numbered years (1985, 1989, 1991) and poor performances in even-numbered years. In 1986, he was 7-12 with a 4.12 ERA. In 1987, another odd-numbered year, Saberhagen had an excellent year, going 18-10 with a 3.36 ERA. That record, however, was disappointing because Saberhagen had entered the All-Star break with a 15-3 record and another Cy Young Award seemingly in the bag. He pitched in the 1987 Major League Baseball All-Star Game, but he suffered a shoulder injury that hampered his second-half performance.

In 1988, the pattern continued as Saberhagen went 14-16 with a 3.80 ERA, the second most losses in the American League. The following year, 1989, he showed flashes of his old brilliance by compiling a record of 23-6 with a 2.16 ERA, leading both leagues with 12 complete games, and finishing third in strikeouts. Before his July 26, 1989 start against the Boston Red Sox, Saberhagen had a record of 9-5. Over the next two months, he compiled a record of 14-1 with four shutouts. Only once in a game over that period did a team score more than two runs. He also led the league in innings pitched, complete games, and strikeout to walk ratio. For his efforts, Saberhagen won his second Cy Young Award as the American League's best pitcher.

Despite a 5-7 record, Saberhagen was selected to the 1990 American League All-Star team, primarily due to his 1989 performance. Saberhagen rewarded the selection as the winning pitcher in the 2-0 American League triumph. Saberhagen only started one post All-Star game before being shelved for most of the rest of 1990 with an injury.

In 1991, he went 13-8 with a 3.07 ERA and pitched a no-hitter against the Chicago White Sox on August 26, 1991 (the last in Royals history [1]). On December 11, 1991, he was traded along with Bill Pecota to the New York Mets in exchange for Kevin McReynolds, Gregg Jefferies, and Keith Miller.

Ford was a native of the Astoria neighborhood of Queens, located in New York City just a few miles from Yankee Stadium over the Triborough Bridge.^[2] Ford was signed by the New York Yankees as an amateur free agent in 1947, and played his entire career in a Yankees uniform. He was given the nickname "Whitey" while in the minor leagues for his exceptionally blond hair. Ford graduated from Aviation High School in nearby Sunnyside, Queens. ^[3]

In 1951 and 1952 he served in the Army during the Korean War. He rejoined the Yankees for the 1953 season, and the Yankee "Big Three" pitching staff became a "Big Four," as Ford joined Allie Reynolds, Vic Raschi and Eddie Lopat.

Eventually Ford went from the No. 4 pitcher on a great staff to the universally acclaimed No. 1 pitcher of the Yankees, becoming known as the "Chairman of the Board" for his ability to remain calm and in command during high-pressure situations. He was also known as "Slick" for his craftiness on the mound. Ford's guile was necessary because he did not have an overwhelming fastball, but being able to throw several other pitches very well gave him pinpoint control. Nonetheless, Ford was an effective strikeout pitcher for his time, tying the then-AL record for six consecutive strikeouts in 1956, and again in 1958. Ford pitched 2 consecutive one-hit games in 1955 to tie a record held by several pitchers. He never pitched a no-hitter.

In 1955, Ford led the American League in complete games and games won; in 1956 in earned run average and winning percentage; in 1958, in earned run average; and in both 1961 and 1963, in games won and winning percentage. Ford won the Cy Young Award in 1961; he likely would have won the 1963 AL Cy Young, but this was before the institution of a separate award for each league, and Ford could not match Sandy Koufax's numbers for the Los Angeles Dodgers of the National League. He would also have been a candidate in 1955, but this was before the award was created.

Some of Ford's totals were depressed by Yankees manager Casey Stengel who viewed Ford as his top pitching asset, and often reserved his ace left-hander for more formidable opponents such as the Tigers, Indians and White Sox. When he became manager in 1961, Ralph Houk promised Ford he would pitch every fourth day, regardless of opponent; after exceeding 30 starts only once in his nine seasons under Stengel, Ford had 39 in 1961. A career-best 25-4 record and the Cy Young Award ensued, but Ford's season was overshadowed by the home run battle between Roger Maris and Mickey Mantle. As a left-hander, Ford was also deft at keeping runners at their base: He set a record in 1961 by pitching 243 consecutive innings without allowing a stolen base.

David Wells tied Whitey Ford for 13th place in victories by a lefhander on August 26, 2007.

Ford's status on the Yankees was underscored by the World Series. Ford was New York's Game One pitcher in 1955, 1956, 1957, 1958, 1961, 1962, 1963, and 1964. In the 1960 World Series against the Pittsburgh Pirates, Stengel altered this strategy by holding Ford back until Game Three, a decision that angered Ford. The Yankees' ace won both his starts in Games Three and Six with complete-game shutouts, but was then unavailable to relieve in the last game of an unexpected Yankees loss, Bill Mazeroski's walk-off home run in the bottom of the ninth winning the game—and the Series—for the Pirates. Ford always felt that had he been able to appear in three of the games instead of just two, the Yankees would have won. Upper management may have agreed: Stengel was fired following the Series.

For his career, Ford had 10 World Series victories, more than any other pitcher. Ford also leads all starters in World Series losses (8) and starts (22), as well as innings, hits, walks, and strikeouts. In 1961 he broke Babe Ruth's World Series record of 29 2/3 consecutive scoreless innings. (The record would eventually reach 33 2/3, and stood for four decades until Mariano Rivera broke it in 2000.) Ford ended his career in declining health. In August 1966, he underwent surgery to correct a circulatory problem in his throwing shoulder. In May 1967, Ford lasted just one inning in what would be his final start, and he announced his retirement at the end of the month at age 40.

After his career ended, Ford admitted to occasionally cheating by doctoring baseballs in various ways, such as the "mudball," which could only be used at home in Yankee Stadium: Yankee groundskeepers would wet down an area near the catcher's box where Yankee catcher Elston Howard was positioned; pretending to lose balance on a pitch while in his crouch and landing on his right hand (with the ball in it), Howard would coat one side of the ball with mud. Ford would sometimes use the diamond in his wedding ring to gouge the ball, but he was eventually caught by an umpire and warned to stop; Howard then sharpened a buckle on his shinguard and used it to scuff the ball. In an interview at the last game at Yankee Stadium, Ford admitted to doctoring the ball in the 1962 All Star Game at Candlestick Park to strike out Willie Mays. Ford had a vested interest in doing so; Ford and Mantle had accumulated $800 in golf green fees, which the Yankees owner had agreed to cancel if Ford could strike out Mays.

In 1977, Ford was part of the broadcast team for the first game in Toronto Blue Jays history. ^[4] In 1999, Ford ranked 52nd on The Sporting News list of Baseball's Greatest Players, and was a nominee for the Major League Baseball All-Century Team. In 2003, Ford was inducted into the Nassau County Sports Hall of Fame. In 2008, Ford threw the first pitch at the 2008 Major League Baseball All-Star Game. On September 21, 2008 Ford and Yogi Berra were guests of the broadcast team for the final game played at Yankee Stadium.

The Oakland Athletics drafted Rod Beck as a starting pitcher in the 13th round (327^th pick) of the 1986 MLB Amateur Draft. In 1989, while with the San Jose Giants of the California League^[2], he posted a record of 11-2 between opening day and June 13^th when he was promoted to the Shreveport Captains of the Double A Texas League. Rod made his Major League debut on May 6, 1991, versus the Montreal Expos. His performance was forgettable, (2.0 IP, 3 H, 2 ER), but his season numbers were more impressive. He had a 3.78 ERA; pitched 52⅓ innings in 31 games; struck out 38 & walked 13. In 1992, Rod took over as the regular closer from Dave Righetti and posted a record of 3-3 with 17 saves and a 1.76 ERA. He pitched 92 innings over 65 games and struck out 87 while walking only 15. Beck's best season was in 1993^[3], when he recorded 48 saves, including a then-record 24 straight for the Giants.

After the 1997 season, the Giants felt Beck's best years were behind him, and allowed him to leave as a free agent to sign with the Chicago Cubs, replacing him with Robb Nen. Beck set a career high in saves in his first season with the Cubs, converting 51 of 58 chances. However, in the 1999 season, Beck battled injury, and was traded by Chicago to the Boston Red Sox in exchange for reliever Mark Guthrie and a player to be named later, who turned out to be Cole Liniak^[4].

Beck pitched well for the surging Red Sox, although he struggled in the postseason (giving up a Bernie Williams walkoff home run in Game One of the 1999 ALCS) and wasn't as good as he had been in the past in his two full seasons with the team. After the 2001 season, Beck had Tommy John surgery. Beck successfully recovered from Tommy John surgery and floated around in the minors before being signed by the Cubs. While pitching for the team's AAA affiliate Iowa Cubs during his comeback, Beck gained national attention for living in a mobile home behind the team's Sec Taylor Stadium (now Principal Park) in Des Moines. Beck warmly welcomed fans to drop by and visit, use his restroom, and drink ice cold Coors Light from his refrigerator^[5]. He was later traded to the San Diego Padres.

His statistics earned him the National League Comeback Player of the year award. In 2004, Beck dealt with personal problems during Spring Training and struggled in a seventh inning role for the Padres. Beck was released by San Diego in August.

On June 23, 2007, Beck died alone at his home in Phoenix, Arizona^[1][7]. While the cause of death has not been disclosed, Phoenix police do not suspect foul play;^[1] cocaine was found in his home and bedroom.^[8] Beck was buried in his Chicago Cubs uniform^[9]. Beck's name was added to the 2008 ballot for the Baseball Hall of Fame, waiving the normal five-year period before eligibility, however he only received two votes. ^[10]
